Lyn Collins recorded "Think (About It)" in 1972 with James Brown producing and the J.B.'s providing the musical backing. Collins was one of the most powerful vocalists in Brown's stable of artists, and "Think" gave her a showcase â a driving, call-and-response funk workout that built to a feverish intensity. But the element that gave the track its immortality was the drum break.
Rob Base and DJ E-Z Rock's 1988 hit "It Takes Two" was built almost entirely around the "Think" break, and that single usage alone would have secured its place in music history. But the break had been a hip-hop staple for years before that, and it crossed into house, techno, and breakbeat hardcore with equal ease. Its crisp, open groove sits at a natural sweet spot for dance music of all kinds, and its uncluttered sound makes it endlessly layerable.
