The Emotions are best remembered for their 1977 disco hit "Best of My Love," but five years earlier they were a Chicago soul group recording raw, emotionally charged music for the Volt label. "Blind Alley" (1972) features a haunting bassline, smooth vocal harmonies, and a solid drum groove that sits in a sweet spot between soul and funk — polished enough to be musical, raw enough to sample.
The break became a favorite among golden-age hip-hop producers. Eric B. & Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, Gang Starr, and Black Moon all drew from "Blind Alley," attracted by its warmth and musicality. Unlike the harder funk breaks that powered aggressive rap, "Blind Alley" brought a soulful quality that worked beautifully under lyrical, reflective tracks.
